A few months ago, we were asked if we wanted an old fish tank. As you know, I’m not one to turn down anything that is free so I said yes!
I had no idea what I wanted to do with the tank but I knew that something would come to me eventually.
So the tank sat in the shop for several months.
When we were visiting several flea markets to get inspiration for a St. Patrick’s Day project, I thought it would be fun to make a miniature Irish garden full of rolling hills.
I was trying to decide on a planter or a lid or something to plant my garden when I remembered the fish tank!!
The tank was a perfect size and my thoughts are to put it in the house and decorate it every holiday.
It is so much fun to play with those miniature figurines and to decide where I wanted to put everything!
Here is how I made the miniature garden:
First, we cleaned the fish tank with soap and water because it was so dusty from sitting for a very long time.
Then, we tried to decide what we wanted for the filler. I do not have a green thumb so the live objects in the tank will go when the holiday is over.
So we decided on some walnut sawdust from our sawmill for the filler.
We covered the sawdust with moss taken from our field. I wanted it to have the rolling effect so we cut thin slices and clumps of moss together.
The garden needed a house so I made a hobbit house using polymer clay, some florist foam and some of the pieces of moss that we found.
I’ll write a tutorial on the polymer clay house too! I loved working with it and can’t wait to make more fun projects.
So now that we had a house, we needed some people and items to put in the garden and around the house.
I wanted an Irish garden so I picked up some Reindeer Moss and bought a couple of lambs to graze there. One of the signs from the packages of miniatures that I bought said “Critter Cove” so that would be a perfect place.
There also couldn’t be an Irish garden without Gnomes so they were sprinkled throughout the garden along with one that welcomes you to his home!
I’m including a list so you are able to find the things needed easily. The fish tank was given to us but I’ll also include one of those in the list.
